Boating and Drinking Don't Mix - Everyone Wants To Have A Good Time, But Be Smart About It

By Keith Raven

Hey guys, lets go to the sandbar, load up the coolers and the lotion and lets head out.

How many times have you heard this, or something similar and went along with the crowd? The next time you head out on your boat to spend the day on the water, make sure you have a designated drive. The same way you would if you were leaving the bar in your vehicle.

We all boat to have a good time; there is no doubt about it. I just spent the weekend boating with family and friends and had a great time. We dropped some friends off at the sandbar with their drinks and chairs, and let them have a great time, while the kids and I went and had a great time tubing and skiing. After a great and safe afternoon of boating, we went back to the sandbar and picked up the adults that had been drinking and enjoying themselves. Everyone had a great time, and nobody caused or had any injuries on the boat or water that day.

Remember boating and alcohol can be a deadly combination, especially on a boat. Physical and mental changes can happen immediately to your body once alcohol has been digested. If youre out on the boat or Jet Ski after consuming an alcoholic drink, you are putting yourself and everyone else out on the lake in serious danger. Unfortunately in many states drinking and boating have caused serious injuries and fatalities. Studies have shown that consuming alcohol before or during boating has caused 25% of boating accidents. Most have been due to drowning or boat collisions.

After drinking a small amount of alcohol and then boating, you can still cause serious damage or injury to the people you care about. Most boaters that drink and then boat dont realize all of the distractions that you need to consider while boating. Waves, noise, sun, family and friends, other boating traffic, and many more. Boaters that have consumed alcohol tend to get a little more risky and relaxed as they start to boat. Add the alcohol to all of the distractions and you have an intensified situation.

Everyone wants to have a great and enjoyable time on the water, but lets remember to be smart and safe. Make sure the driver has not been drinking, and uses good judgment with the other friends and family that have been drinking.

Tips On sailboat

Sailing equipment is an important part of the purchase of a new or second-hand boat. It is one of those things where you can spend as much money as you wish on equipment for your new cruiser or sailing yacht, so you must give yourself a budget. Obviously, there is a set of essential equipment that all water goers must have, but then there are different sets of equipment required, dependent on whether you will be messing around locally or being more adventurous with long off-shore trips.

RIB or sometimes known as RHIB (Rigid Hull Inflatable Boat) is a craft with a rigid hull and inflatable tube around the top. Inflatables can be moved and carried easily to their place of use, ribs may require a trailer. Most inflatables can be put together, inflated and ready to use in a short time. They have excellent performance, handling and versatility and are known to be very safe. They are made in a range of sizes from about 3 metres(10 feet) for a tender type, up to around 9 metres (30 feet) for an large offshore boat. They have also been used for other purposes apart from leisure such as search and rescue work with the coastguard and the Royal National Lifeboat Institution. Well known manufacturers of these boats include:

Sailing Crew For Thailand To Eastern Med: End Feb 08

Thu, 3 Jan 2008 12:44:39 +0200
Sailing Crew - First mate wanted for approximately 8 week sailing trip from Phuket to Cyprus. Must have blue water sailing experience and speak fluent English. I'm looking for a really solid individual who I can trust enough to be able to sleep when I'm not on watch! Non smoker, no drugs, no booze at sea. Prefer somebody who likes fishing and diving. Absolutely no contribution. I pay all travel costs to get to Thailand and back home from the Med. Would consider paying a modest salary to the right person.

South African crew wanted for Clipper 07-08

South African crew wanted for Clipper 07-08 to defend national pride! Durban Clipper will be competing again in the Clipper 07-08 Round the World Yacht Race when it sets off from Liverpool, UK, on 16 September this year. This will be the second time Durban Clipper has taken part in the race – having finished on the podium in a very creditable second place in Clipper 05-06. With the exception of the skippers, none of the crews are professional sailors and many of those taking part have never sailed before beginning their comprehensive race training. It is not too late for people from South Africa to sign up to take part in this 35,000-mile ocean race. Durban Clipper was narrowly beaten to second place on her first outing by westernaustralia.com Clipper, so there is a great deal of Southern Hemisphere pride to play for!

Sailing/cruising To Achieve One's Goals.

Sun, 19 Aug 2007 16:55:16 +0200
After reading Liz Clark's sailing blog, my husband and I started talking about what was so refreshing about it (besides the good grammar and pics!). Well, the thing that jumped out was the fact that this cruiser wasn't identifying herself as a cruiser but instead as a surfer-girl. Her outlook on life, her goals, where she's going and what she's doing doesn't simply focus on "cruising" for the sake of cruising. We realized that we were craving another viewpoint like this. We absolutely love to hear about people who are achieving another life goal where sailing/cruising happens to be a conduit to the achievement. What do you all think?
