Boat Storage Covers - The Importance Of Boat Storage Cover!

By Abhishek Agarwal

Where would you park your boat, when not in use? Mostly in the garage? Or in your backyard perhaps? Wherever you put your boat away, it is important that it is in a perfect condition for your next boating experience. Because, no matter how closed your place is dust, moisture and various other things in the air can cause lot of damages to your boat. It is, therefore, important that you fully cover your boat with Boat Storage Covers, when not in use.

Besides the conditions of the storage place rains, snow, storm and hot sun too have their effect on the boat. The hot sun can wear the seats, and pale the paint of your boat. Rain and snow cause dew and water droplets to form at various places of your boat, leading to water entering your engine. All these could do a lot of damage to your boat.

Using boat storage covers to keep your boat covered helps you even if you keep your boat outdoors. Boats are generally made of fiber glass or aluminium. There are lot of elements in the air that can cause the paint to peel, excessive dust and mud particles that can abrate your shining surface, moisture and dust entering the exhaust etc. These could affect the good condition of you boat, if left uncovered. You may need to take time and spend a lot of money in putting your boat in order each time you intend to go boating.

Boat storage covers are available in different materials to suit your budget as well as the storage conditions. If you were parking your boat in the open air, a cover made of synthetic canvas would be most ideal. On the other hand, if you keep your boat in your garage, then a thin cover of plastic or even natural canvas would be sufficient to keep the harmful elements away.

While considering boat storage covers, you may also have to consider if the place where you store your boat would invite bugs and insects. Covers like the natural canvas, though are quite inexpensive, are good refuge for bug colonies. You wouldn't want to spend time shooing the bugs and insects away just when you want to enjoy a good boat ride.

Boat storage covers help in retaining the shine and sheen of your boat, while also keeping the harmful elements away from the delicate parts of the boat. They also keep away insects and bugs. Your boat would look just as good as new with a few wipes here and there. Therefore, no matter where you park your boat, indoors or outdoors, and for as little time as you choose, it is always important to cover with boat storage covers.

Being Your Own Mechanic as owner of a sailing yacht.

Reading this sailing blog for the past few weeks makes me realize how incredibly difficult it must be to own a boat if you don't have the skills to do the mechanical work yourself. I wonder what percent of today's cruisers rely on a mechanic versus do-it-yourself?

Stitch-It Awl, Sail repair tool - and other uses on sailing yachts.

Used a similar tool many years ago - it was a very useful , especially when repairing a genoa on my sailing yacht where the clew's grommet/cringle had pulled out - this one looks similar. Seems expensive but I guess if it is strongly built it and because it might have an easy life, it should last the life of your boat. Over time it could turn out to save a lot of journeys to the sailmaker.

"We are back in Nelson after departing for Australia and running into considerable trouble. Here's what happened. Ken, Graeme our crew, and I finished with New Zealand Customs at about 9:00 am on Thursday, April 12 and headed out toward Farewell Spit headed to Sydney, Australia in calm conditions. The predicted forecast was for a 15 knot winds building throughout the day until Friday afternoon when 30kts and 3 meter swells were expected to peak and then ease late that night with westerlies to15 kts on Saturday".
