The Oceanswatch web site was interesting to me, but I'm not familiar with many charitable organizations traveling on small private yachts, and so I wrote to Oceanswatch for a copy of their charter before I went any further. They really haven't been very forthcoming, it seems. On their web site, under "charter" they state: "Copies of our Trust documents are available on request by emailing chris@oceanswatch.org" I emailed Chris, and here are the emails sent and received as of today. It doesn't cost him anything to send copies of this stuff to me, does it? So now I'm asking what does he have to hide? Anybody here know?

From all of your experience is it feasible to use a manual windlass or are the 12 volt models the only way to go on a sailing yacht? The cost of the manual models is so much less that i would like to go that way. I have just found out the hard way that pulling up and anchor and chain by hand in a windward anchorage can be difficult and dangerous. Thanks for your thoughts.

It doesn't have to be exact, and shouldn't be overblown, but this is intended to buttress the arguments of many destination-based businesses that cruising sailors are good for the local economy. This is a subject near and dear to my heart, because it isn't just Fiji who discounts the cruising sailor as a benefit to the economy, and it's the powerful resorts who get the ear of government in most economies dependent upon the tourist dollar.

Some systems also have the option of adjusting the length of the planks.

The support poles can be adjusted to any size ranging from 20 to 60 inches. They are made out of aluminum with a rubber base and a cushioned tip to hold the cover up without damaging it. Used a similar tool many years ago - it was a very useful , especially when repairing a genoa on my sailing yacht where the clew's grommet/cringle had pulled out - this one looks similar. Seems expensive but I guess if it is strongly built it and because it might have an easy life, it should last the life of your boat. Over time it could turn out to save a lot of journeys to the sailmaker.

Is there a practical reason why some cruisers choose round over cylindrical (or vice versa) fenders for a sailing yacht? I have been told the guide for fender size is 2.5cm per 1.5m (1" per 5') of boat length for cylindrical, and 5cm per 1.5m (2" per 5') for round; is this an effective measure? Some sailors also seem to think that suspending fenders from the hand railings/wire between staunchions is poor seamanship...is there a modern reason why this may be true?

With the majority of the hull clear of the water, there is reduced drag, greatly enhancing speed and maneuverability, so jetboats are normally operated at planing speed. At slower speeds with less water pumping through the jet unit, the jetboat will lose some steering control and maneuverability and will quickly slow down as the hull comes off its planing state and hull resistance is increased. However, loss of steering control at low speeds can be negated by lowering the reverse deflector slightly and increasing throttle - so you increase thrust and thus control without increasing boat speed itself. A conventional river-going jet boat will have a shallow-angled (but not flat-bottomed) hull to improve its high speed cornering control and stability while also allowing it to traverse very shallow water. At speed, jetboats can be safely operated in less than 3 inches to (7.5 cm) of water.

I was just reading the thread on sailing yacht propellers and was wondering if anybody has ever used their propeller to generate electricity while under sail. Seems like it would be easy enough... just install a gear on the shaft and connect it to some form of small turbine.... I would think this could be a pretty efficient way to charge batteries, etc., while under sail but I've never heard anyone comment on it.

In this case it would be worth contacting the mooring operator to find out when the best times are for using your boat. Half Tide is when the tide will be in at your mooring for about half the time of the full tide. All States Of Tide means that your boat will be afloat all of the time, moorings in these areas tend to be more expensive than the mud berths as you can use your boat at any time

Used a similar tool many years ago - it was a very useful , especially when repairing a genoa on my sailing yacht where the clew's grommet/cringle had pulled out - this one looks similar. Seems expensive but I guess if it is strongly built it and because it might have an easy life, it should last the life of your boat. Over time it could turn out to save a lot of journeys to the sailmaker.

At slower speeds with less water pumping through the jet unit, the jetboat will lose some steering control and maneuverability and will quickly slow down as the hull comes off its planing state and hull resistance is increased. However, loss of steering control at low speeds can be negated by lowering the reverse deflector slightly and increasing throttle - so you increase thrust and thus control without increasing boat speed itself. A conventional river-going jet boat will have a shallow-angled (but not flat-bottomed) hull to improve its high speed cornering control and stability while also allowing it to traverse very shallow water. At speed, jetboats can be safely operated in less than 3 inches to (7.5 cm) of water.

Hey guys, lets go to the sandbar, load up the coolers and the lotion and let�s head out.

How many times have you heard this, or something similar and went along with the crowd? The next time you head out on your boat to spend the day on the water, make sure you have a designated drive. The same way you would if you we�re leaving the bar in your vehicle.

We all boat to have a good time; there is no doubt about it. I just spent the weekend boating with family and friends and had a great time. We dropped some friends off at the sandbar with their drinks and chairs, and let them have a great time, while the kids and I went and had a great time tubing and skiing. After a great and safe afternoon of boating, we went back to the sandbar and picked up the adults that had been drinking and enjoying themselves. Everyone had a great time, and nobody caused or had any injuries on the boat or water that day.

Remember boating and alcohol can be a deadly combination, especially on a boat. Physical and mental changes can happen immediately to your body once alcohol has been digested. If you�re out on the boat or Jet Ski after consuming an alcoholic drink, you are putting yourself and everyone else out on the lake in serious danger. Unfortunately in many states drinking and boating have caused serious injuries and fatalities. Studies have shown that consuming alcohol before or during boating has caused 25% of boating accidents. Most have been due to drowning or boat collisions.

After drinking a small amount of alcohol and then boating, you can still cause serious damage or injury to the people you care about. Most boaters that drink and then boat don�t realize all of the distractions that you need to consider while boating. Waves, noise, sun, family and friends, other boating traffic, and many more. Boaters that have consumed alcohol tend to get a little more risky and relaxed as they start to boat. Add the alcohol to all of the distractions and you have an intensified situation.

Everyone wants to have a great and enjoyable time on the water, but lets remember to be smart and safe. Make sure the driver has not been drinking, and uses good judgment with the other friends and family that have been drinking.

Hunter Boats was started in 1969, with the first "famous" boat being the NATIONAL SQUIB, designed and finished by Oliver Lee, and moulded by the Essex Boat Company. The Squib has gone on to reach national status with more than 800 on the water. In 1970, a chap named Michael Poland requested that the builder design a "lid" for the Squib, to enable him to sail it across the English Channel. Today, the most common sailboat is the sloop which features one mast and two sails, a normal mainsail and a foresail. This simple configuration is very efficient for sailing towards the wind. The mainsail is attached to the mast and the boom, which is a spar capable of swinging across the boat, depending on the direction of the wind. Depending on the size and design of the foresail it can be called a jib, genoa, or spinnaker; it is possible but not common for a sloop to carry two foresails from the one forestay at one time (wing on wing). The forestay is a line or cable running from near the top of the mast to a point near the bow. In Bermuda, where a rig design influenced by the Lateen rig appeared on boats and came to be known as the Bermuda rig, a large spinnaker was carried on a spinnaker boom when running down-wind. An example of a typical sloop can be seen on the Islander 36.

When catching dinner, how concerned are cruisers and sailors about catching fish which carry the Ciguatera toxin? I only know what amounts to 'folklore'. In Australian waters many anglers avoid eating large fish which are known to dwell amid coral reefs. The parrot fish (beautiful fillets!!) is known to be particularly prone to Ciguatera. I understand that fish caught in deep water, or away from coral, do not carry Ciguatera. Is this correct?

Originally, the design was meant for crouching and standing on a platform roughly located at the rear of the equipment. However, innovation caused newer models to provide the flexibility of varying positions through the use of engineered designs. Add to it the steering column that allows vertical and horizontal movements. All these added to the rider's freedom of movement and whenever necessary, wave actions.

The jet propulsion system, being the main reason why jet skis are called was the most innovative addition to personal watercrafts. This happens when the water is driven into a tube attached in the craft and is then ejected in the rear, thus the jet effect.

This same tube in jet skis is also capable of moving horizontally from side to side, which helps a great deal during steering actions.

The power system of jet ski, being the ideal one for personal watercrafts features safety and speed. External propellers can't be found so riders need not worry on this part.

While jet skis have become the generic name for personal watercrafts designed through following the general outlines and use of the first jet skis, it would still be good to note that Jet Ski is the trademark of what Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd. have produced some decades ago. The term Jet Ski is also commonly used for personal water craft versions which are equipped with handpoles, such as the stand up jet skis.

The story of boats is as old as the human civilization. There�s reference of a boat �Noah's ark� in the Bible. Noah's ark was the boat built by the Biblical character Noah to save his family and animals from the Flood. Gondolas were the traditionally used boats in Venice.

Today, a boat is considered as one of the major tools of watercraft. A boat is a small vessel for traveling on water. It comprises of one or more buoyancy structures called hulls, and some system of propulsion such as a screw, oars, paddles, a setting pole, a sail, paddlewheels or a water jet.

The front of a boat is called the bow or prow and the rear of the boat is called the stern. The right side is starboard and the left side is port. The boat toilet is called the �heads�.

A boat with a housing compartment is called a houseboat or barge. A pontoon boat is a flat-bottomed boat that serves as a dock or as a floating structure to support a bridge. The pontoon boat is also known as a party boat. It is constructed of round tubes (called sponsons) that are attached to the outside, bottom edge of a large flat deck. It has a safety railing that surrounds the deck from all sides. The helm station is placed either in the middle of the deck or off to one side. Pontoon boats may be furnished with lawn furniture, and some deluxe pontoon boats may have upholstered seating, a dinette table, a roof, a cooler, and maybe even a head (toilet).

A recreational boat is used for water sporting activities or other recreational purposes.

A sailboat uses the wind normally to propel the boat instead of an engine.

People fond of water sports or water adventures keep their own boats. Taking good care of one�s boat is very important. Good care and maintenance enhances the life of a boat and saves a lot of money also.

The product is made in S Africa and is approved by the SA Burough of Standards and in use by the local Military amongst many other govt. and semi-govt. organizations and private groups. * Submerged rocks or coral? Not a problem when you're cruising on air above the water level.

Hovercraft has very real advantages over more conventional marine craft. While you're out having fun on the sand flats, the boaties and jet skiers will be checking their clocks and tide tables.

You might be wondering how easy it is to drive Hovercraft?

It takes just ten minutes to understand the basics, then the real fun begins.

The thrill of driving a small hovercraft is difficult to describe. Floating on a cushion of air at speed, you get the feeling that perhaps you are on a magic carpet, or anti-gravity skateboard. You have great freedom to express yourself.

You can do 180 degree turns on the beach, or perpetual 360s or 720 spins. As you can drive on sea and land, you'll probably want to combine both in a little beach hugging exercise. You can turn in graceful loops, or slide and glide - whatever the mood takes you.

Owners of bigger yachts can use hovercraft as a tender, or as a fun watercraft.

Hovercraft make a great rescue and patrol vehicle too. You can access areas that are simply out of bounds for any other craft. For example, they can gracefully float over ice and go where snowmobiles fear to tread.

Boat for sale. If that was a sign, it might as well read, 'Give me your wallet and access to your bank account, and in exchange I'll give you a boat that does not suite your needs.'

The boat buying market is huge, with very little logic in the pricing structures, especially in the used market. If you are about to look for your first boat, you will want to keep several factors in the front of your mind before even making an offer.

One of the most common errors is to be oversold and wind up with a boat that will not do what you originally set out to do. For example, if your primary purpose in getting a boat is to go fishing in small inlets, the fact that the boat you are looking at comes with four bunks in the lower deck for the same price as the bass boat down the street is of no concern. If you get the larger boat, it will not physically fit where you want to use it. That is not a bargain. Make sure that the boat will be able to serve the function for which you want it.

Size is important for another reason, also. You need to be sure that you have the skills and expertise to handle the boat. Getting in over your head and buying a boat you cannot yet operate not only will cause you frustration, but could become a safety hazard to yourself and your passengers. You can trade the boat in later for another one as your skills improve.

Additionally, you will need to trailer it, even if only occasionally. Do you have a trailer that will fit the boat? If not, the cost of the trailer will become a factor as well. Many people forget this fact when they get caught up in the excitement of buying a boat. Large beams may also require a special trailer permit in some locales. Forgetting these important facts can truly leave you high and dry.

You will also need to make sure you know what the draft is before you buy a boat. Does your marina have deep enough waters to support the draft? Is the draft short enough to get to the waterways in which you will be taking your boat? If you do not know the answer to these questions, you must find out before even making an offer on a boat.

If you are not sure of some of the answers to these questions, before you even start looking for a boat, visit your local marina and talk to some of the captains. They will be happy to share information with you and help you find out what types of boats will work best for you.

It is OK to get excited about buying a boat. It can be something that will provide you with a lifetime of enjoyment. Just be sure to buy the boat that will best suit your needs, so that boating can be all fun and no hassle. The more suited your boat is to your purposes, the more enjoyment you will get out of it.

Until the 1950s, almost all yachts were made of wood, or steel in larger yacht, but now there is a much wider range of materials. Although wood hulls are still in production, the most common construction material is fibreglass, followed by aluminum, steel, carbon fibre, and ferrocement (rarer because of insurance difficulties). The use of wood has changed and is no longer limited to traditionally board-based methods, but also includes modern products such as plywood, veneers and epoxy resins. However, wood is mostly used by hobbyists or wooden boat purists when building an individual boat.

In a jetboat, the waterjet draws water from beneath the hull where it passes through a series of impellers and stators - known as stages - which increase the velocity of the waterflow. Most modern jets are single stage while older waterjets may have as many as three stages. The tail section of the waterjet unit extends out through the transom of the hull above the waterline. This jetstream exits the unit through a small nozzle at high velocity to push the boat forward. Steering is accomplished by moving this nozzle to either side, or less commonly, by small gates on either side that direct the jetstream. Because the jet boat relies on the flow of water through the nozzle for control, it is not possible to steer a conventional jet boat without the throttle open.

How many people will use the boat at one time? Do you require a boat that has accommodations for sleeping? How much money have you set aside to purchase the boat?

Once you determine what type of boat you want, you can start comparing different available boats. Your first concern, of course, is the safety of the boat. Newer boats should have little safety concerns, but with used boats you will need to know what to look for. Ask whomever is selling the boat if the boat has ever been in any type of accident. Check to see if the paint is chipped or whether you can see spots where the paint color is not uniform. This might indicate an accident. Are their any rust lines or lines where you can tell that the boat was submerged in water? Does the deck of the boat feel sturdy or are there spots which feel soft? How does the inside of the boat smell? If you smell mildew or mold, this is not a good sign. Ask for the maintenance records for the boat. Did the previous owner take the time to do routine maintenance tasks?

Some people are quite concerned about the appearance of a boat. Remember, a worn down appearance doesn't necessarily mean that the boat is in bad shape. If you are concerned about the appearance, make sure you do a complete check of the boat before agreeing to buy. If purchasing new, check to see what options and accessories are available at the time of purchase. You can often get a discount on these items if you purchase them with the boat.

Finally, make sure you know all the costs associated with your boat before you make it yours. Remember, the cost of the boat is just one thing you will be expected to pay. Boats need to be registered just like vehicles. If the boat will travel on a trailer, you will probably be expected to register this as well. You will have to pay taxes on the boat. Some other expenses include dock fees, the cost of routine maintenance or repairs, and the cost of your fuel or oil. If you will not be using the boat year round, you need to add in the cost of storing the boat during the winter months. As long as you do your homework before heading out to purchase your boat, you should be quite thrilled with boat ownership.

Is there a practical reason why some cruisers choose round over cylindrical (or vice versa) fenders for a sailing yacht? I have been told the guide for fender size is 2.5cm per 1.5m (1" per 5') of boat length for cylindrical, and 5cm per 1.5m (2" per 5') for round; is this an effective measure? Some sailors also seem to think that suspending fenders from the hand railings/wire between staunchions is poor seamanship...is there a modern reason why this may be true?

So, you're sailing along happily on your 40' yacht (just you and your wife), some 200 miles from the nearest landfall and you see a boat ahead. As you get closer you notice that the vessel is lying very low in the water and the people aboard are waving their arms frantically. As you approach you see that the vessel is very close to sinking and there are about 20 men aboard - obviously a boatload of refugees. It appears that the boat is going down fast.

When catching dinner, how concerned are cruisers and sailors about catching fish which carry the Ciguatera toxin? I only know what amounts to 'folklore'. In Australian waters many anglers avoid eating large fish which are known to dwell amid coral reefs. The parrot fish (beautiful fillets!!) is known to be particularly prone to Ciguatera. I understand that fish caught in deep water, or away from coral, do not carry Ciguatera. Is this correct?

The story of Jet Ski began when Clayton Jacobson II, the known inventor of the original personal water craft, sold the rights to his patent to Kawasaki.

The company began developing this personal water craft and in 1973, came the launch of their WSAA and WSAB models. These 2 are known to be the world�s first Jet Skis. They were produced on a limited basis, powered by 2-stroke twin-cylinder engines. The WSAA was distinguished by a flat haul while the WSAB had a V-type hull.

The year 1976 brought Kawasaki to mass-produce their Jet Ski. This year gave birth to the JS400 (JS400-A) model. When the racers and water sport enthusiasts demanded for power, Kawasaki responded and gave them the JS440 (JS440-A). This model was one of the longest-selling Jet Skis made.

In the 80�s, Jet Ski was more powerful with additional features. This era brought the JS550. It was the first Jet Ski model to come out with revised high-capacity mixed-flow pump that gave it more power for people who wanted to have more than the usual thrill. The JS550 had 531 cm3 2-stroke Twin. Feature included the automatic rpm control.

Today, the most common sailboat is the sloop which features one mast and two sails, a normal mainsail and a foresail. This simple configuration is very efficient for sailing towards the wind. The mainsail is attached to the mast and the boom, which is a spar capable of swinging across the boat, depending on the direction of the wind. Depending on the size and design of the foresail it can be called a jib, genoa, or spinnaker; it is possible but not common for a sloop to carry two foresails from the one forestay at one time (wing on wing). (if anyone has any recommendations for what I should buy - I'm all ears - I'm looking to spend around $200kusd and like the idea of a multi hull) I have limited sailing experience but am certified in advanced navigation standard and off shore cruising standard by CYA. Because of my limited on water experience I am looking for an experienced person to be the "captain" of the boat and teach me along the way! Hopefully the candidate will be easy to get a long with and will be able to stay with the boat long term. (I will need someone to sail/maintain her when I'm not there for 6 months of the year!) The crew will only be expected to contribute an equal share of the cost of food and drinks. All boat costs (fuel, fees, marinas, etc.,) will be covered by me!. Each person is to cover their own travel expenses to/from the boat and their costs of personal visas, etc.

Facts about Boat Insurance and Registration

Registration process of a boat is different in every county throughout the US. Also,
registration depends on the boat type, and the place where one shall be using the boat.

If you are going to use boat in a public waterway, you need to check with your local boat
registrant. If you are using your boat in your own lake or pond for personal use, you will
probably not need to register it. Many types of boats (especially 10' and under) do not need
to be registered.

Who to register the boat with is another question. All counties have different rules n
regulations. Best way is to ask your state department of transportation or motor vehicle
division. Most states give a grace period of 30 days from the time you purchase to the time you
need to register it.

Most important document needed for the registration purpose is the sales receipt. Few
require a manufactures statement of origin, also known as MSO.

And finally, it goes without saying, a registration fee is required. Fees range from

Hello everyone! I am at a crossroads in my life and am excited for the next adventure. My plan is to purchase a sailboat with the proceeds from the sale of my business and live/cruise/relax/explore for 6 months of the year- every year! (if anyone has any recommendations for what I should buy - I'm all ears - I'm looking to spend around $200kusd and like the idea of a multi hull) I have limited sailing experience but am certified in advanced navigation standard and off shore cruising standard by CYA. Because of my limited on water experience I am looking for an experienced person to be the "captain" of the boat and teach me along the way! Hopefully the candidate will be easy to get a long with and will be able to stay with the boat long term. (I will need someone to sail/maintain her when I'm not there for 6 months of the year!) The crew will only be expected to contribute an equal share of the cost of food and drinks. All boat costs (fuel, fees, marinas, etc.,) will be covered by me!. Each person is to cover their own travel expenses to/from the boat and their costs of personal visas, etc.
